FEBRUARY 2008

Letter from the Editor
Dear readers
Welcome to Mazatlan's 2008 Carnaval. We dedicate this
edition to those who are, without a doubt, the symbol of Carnival: the
queens. But the queens and their crowns are not isolated to Mazatlan's
Carnival week, they are also present during everyday life the rest of
the year. The queen elections start at a very young age, in some cases,
when girls begin attending school. Schools have their queen elections,
as do various associations, businesses, and social groups.
This means that year round, hundreds, maybe even thousands
of queens are elected each year in Mazatlan. And behind each queen are
those who dedicate themselves to decorating the parade vehicles. From
those who place the young queen on the trunk of the car, to those who
make elaborate Carnival floats; from those who work out of their homes
making simple, homemade dresses for the little queens, to the experts
who have designed the elaborate dresses seen on the Carnival queen and
her court for over 20 years.
This edition is dedicated to Anabella Gonzalez Guerena,
queen of Carnival in 1958, and to Maria Teresa Osuna Valdez, queen of
Carnival of 1983, both who will be honored for having worn the crown of
this important festival, during Carnival 2008 for their 50 and 25 year
anniversaries, respectively.
We hope you enjoy it.
Affectionately
Elaine Kemp
